Marriage Mentoring

Be a Marriage Mentor
Many young couples are hungering for help in learning how to strengthen their marriages. Marriage mentors are couples who are committed believers and have been married eight years or more. They don't have "perfect" marriages but have learned to work through issues and are still growing spiritually and relationally. In this ministry, marriage mentors are trained with materials and insights that prepare them to meet with a younger couple in a friendship-based ministry for a period of a year. Mentors meet with their younger couple at least six times during that period with a planned but informal approach and having the freedom to meet as often as both couples desire. During that year, marriage mentors also meet together periodically for fellowship, enrichment, encouragement and learning from one another. If you are interested in being a marriage mentor or gaining more information about this powerful ministry, contact Bob Stancil (919-326-3000).

Marriage Mentor Training
Marriage mentor training is offered to couples interested in being a marriage mentor. This training provides materials and insights to prepare mentors to meet with a younger couple. Training includes such topics as: What Marriage Mentoring Is and Isn't, Is Marriage Mentoring a Good Fit for You?, Tools for Marriage Mentors, Questions Engaged and Newlywed Couples Ask, Ideas for Meetings with Your Couple and How to Use the FOCCUS Inventory.

Mentor training is typically offered in fall and spring sessions of four classes meeting on Sunday afternoon for about one and a half hours. We also have quarterly marriage mentor social/forums for fun and ongoing support. Join our team of marriage mentors. For more information or to register, contact Debbie Danforth or Bob Stancil (919-326-3000).

Marriage Mentoring Leadership Team
To provide effective guidance, oversight and support for the marriage mentoring ministry, we have established a leadership team of couples who work together to provide oversight, training, administrative support and follow-up to the mentoring ministry. The marriage mentoring ministry currently involves the following activities:

  • Training New Mentors
  • Matching Mentors with Mentorees
  • Quarterly Mentor Social/Forums
  • Follow-up Support for Identified Issues
  • Maintaining Information on Mentor/Mentoree Match-ups
  • Checking on Status Periodically
  • Coordinating Event Logistics for Trainings and Socials

The marriage mentoring leadership team is made up of at least three to four couples who work together to provide oversight by providing for the above activities. This leadership team functions as a sub-team of the marriage ministry council and works under the direction and with support of the council. Support is also provided by the assistant pastor of pastoral care (having oversight of marriage ministry). The marriage mentoring leadership team has flexibility to recommend changes and improvements in all areas of marriage mentoring. If you are interested in more information or in serving on the marriage mentor leadership team, please contact Bob Stancil (919-326-3000).
