Family Discipleship

God’s design is for families to unite and partner with the local church for the mutual purposes of exaltation, evangelism and edification.

Connecting Church and Home

In Genesis, God created the first institution—the family. He creates the second institution in the New Testament—the church. So how are we to view these two institutions? Are they rivals? Is one no longer needed? The Bible teaches that the church and family are to be united for the same purpose (Acts 2:42-47).

Like the family, the church was ordained by God and given an important role on earth for eternity. Scriptures teach that both the church and the family are assigned to pass on faith to future generations. Why the overlap? The church and the family share a united purpose of making God known (Psalms 78:4).

God’s Framework

Much of Scripture is written to remind parents of their primary role as disciplers of their children. The peak of this teaching is called the Shema and is found in Deuteronomy 6:4-9. Before there were churches, Sunday Schools, and youth groups, God entrusted parents with the privilege to teach their children. This command hasn’t changed. There is no Shema Version 2.0

Steve Farrar reminds us, “There is no ‘new and improved’ version to these commands. They have not been upgraded. They were perfect when they were given and they will be perfect for as long as men walk the earth… The job description is timeless.”[i] God has given you a great privilege.
