Summit 8
On a bright Sunday morning in May of 2010, you and your student will be sitting in our fellowship hall participating in one of the more defining moments in our student ministry, our senior brunch. This day is defining for many reasons, but mostly because it is your student's final farewell from the Student Ministry staff. It is a day of celebration of what has been accomplished and of reflection on the many things they have learned that will help them for their next step in life and preparation for college and the next four years of their journey in life.
This year of eighth grade is much the same in the life of your student. They are standing at the summit of their middle school years, anxiously anticipating what lies ahead. Whenever you reach a summit in your life, it is a time of not only celebration but also a time for reflection and preparation. Over the next year, you will have the opportunity participate with your student in all three phases of the Summit 8 strategy. Here are the elements of
that basic strategy.
Summit 8 Rally
This is the celebration aspect of Summit 8, which occurs in September. You and your student will have just finished an incredible year capped off with a life-changing journey and for that you should be congratulated for a job well done. The journey, however, has not ended. At this rally you will also be made aware of the other two aspects of Summit 8: the time capsule and
the purity band.
Time Capsule
This is the reflection aspect of Summit 8. Your time capsule will be given to you on loan, with the stipulation that you must return it to us on the day of your student's senior brunch. Inside each time capsule will be a set of instructions that will guide you and your student on how to use your time capsule over the course of the year. This is something that both you and your student will do together. Each family will receive their time capsule at the Summit 8 rally.
Purity Band
This is the preparation aspect of Summit 8. At the end of the Summit 8 rally your student will be given a white purity band to wear. In Connections and Refinery, there will be a theme of "lifestyle purity." Purity begins in the heart, and purity should be displayed in all of our actions, not just the ones related to the opposite sex. This band will serve as a reminder to the students of a commitment that they will be making now for the next several years of their lives to "Live Pure" in every aspect of their life.
