“Be to me a rock of refuge, to which I may continually come; you have given the command to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress.” – Psalm 71:3
Life–events, circumstances, concerns–can leave us feeling shaken. In these moments, when we remember that “the name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run into it and is safe” (Proverbs 18:10), it is a blessing to run to El Sehlag, God my Rock.
A physical rock is reassuring in its firm, unyielding permanence. Have you ever stood on a rock ledge, sure that it would not give way beneath you? Have you ever watched children climbing on a large rock, confident that it is strong, stable, and secure? So God wants us to feel this confident as we lean on Him. God is the true Rock, and every other aspect of His character intersects. His truth and wisdom are unchanging, His holiness and majesty unyielding, His power and sovereignty firm, His lovingkindness, and forgiveness secure.
A longtime favorite verse is Psalm 18:1-2:
I love You, O Lord my strength.
The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer;
my God, my rock in whom I take refuge.
my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
I like to think of my quiet times with God as a fortress built of impenetrable rock. In it, I am absolutely safe and fully known. I can receive wisdom and direction from my Strength. I can receive comfort for hard things and find courage for difficult things from my Rock and Fortress. I can receive gentle correction and bow in worship before my Deliverer. The walls of this refuge are suffused with lovingkindness. And, even when I leave it, I take with me my Shield and the Horn of my Salvation.
Have events of this world or in your life left you feeling shaken? Run to your strong Tower and make good use of your time with God the Rock. Remember that God the Rock is God your Rock. He is strong, stable and unchanging—the same yesterday, today and forever. And He invites us to run to Him, tuck in and lean with all our might.
