Jesus — The Alpha and Omega

| Kiale Trenholme-Pihl

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty” (Revelation 1:8).

I love the book of Revelation! As a new Christian, it was one of the first books of the Bible I read in its entirety. At seventeen, I was curious about the purpose of life and what happens after death. This curiosity led me to start attending Sunday services at a local church and reading the King James Bible in my room at night. If the Bible really was the true story of the whole world from beginning to end, I thought the best place to look for answers on how everything will turn out would be found in its last book.

Eighteen years later, I realize that knowing how it will all end is less important than knowing the One who will carry it out to completion. Now my Bible study centers on understanding more about God—His character and promises.

The Bible opens by proclaiming, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). And it closes with Jesus pronouncing, “Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me to repay each one for what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end” (Revelation 22:12-13). Encased between these bookends are a multitude of promises. Let’s just focus on a few.

According to God’s Word:

  • God created the world and everything in it good (Genesis 1:31).
  • Humans disobeyed God and broke fellowship with their Creator (Genesis 3:6; Romans 3:23).
  • Jesus is God, was with God in the beginning, and came to earth in the flesh (John 1:1-3, 14).
  • Jesus lived a blameless life, died in the place of sinners, and rose from the dead to offer eternal life to all who, by faith, trust in Him (Romans 10:9; Ephesians 2:4-9).
  • Jesus will return one day to make all things new (Revelation 21:5-7).

I still have unanswered questions about life, death, and the Bible; but I am grateful that when I was an unbeliever, God sparked curiosity in my heart for His truth that eventually lit me on fire for His Word. Since confessing Jesus as Lord, the flame of my devotion has flared and flickered. Yet the embers of His truth hidden in my heart continue to burn.

Where are you in your faith journey? Are you searching for answers? Are you a recent convert who is on fire for Jesus? Are you a seasoned believer who is trying to rekindle a passion for God you once experienced?

Remember to draw near to Him. Spend time reading His Word, praying, and living in community with other believers. Rest in the fact that He is sovereign over our lives and our world. Jesus has promised one day to make all things new. Believe Him.

“And He who was seated on the throne said, ‘Behold, I am making all things new.’ Also he said, ‘Write this down for these words are trustworthy and true.’ And he said to me, ‘It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be My son’” (Revelation 21:5-7).
